Fabric Hot Plates or Pot Holders

Fabric hot plates and pot holders are a great way to add a personal touch to your kitchen while keeping it functional and stylish! Here are a few ideas and options:

  1. Microwavable Plate Cozy: These are fabric bowl cozies that can also double as pot holders. They're perfect for keeping your hands safe from hot dishes.

  2. Quilted Pot Holders: These are often made from fabric scraps and can be both decorative and functional. You can find them on platforms like Etsy.

  3. Silicone Trivets: While not purely fabric, these trivets often have fabric covers and provide excellent heat resistance.

Would you like some DIY ideas for making your own fabric hot plates or pot holders, or are you looking to purchase them?

To make them

Great! Making your own fabric hot plates or pot holders is a fun and practical sewing project. Here's a step-by-step guide to get you started:

Materials:

  • Fabric: Choose 100% cotton fabric for both the front and back.

  • Insulated Batting: Look for products like Insul-Bright, which will help protect your hands from the heat.

  • Cotton Batting: This is optional, but adding a layer of cotton batting can provide extra cushioning.

  • Thread: Use 100% cotton thread.

  • Sewing Machine: You can also sew by hand if you prefer.

  • Scissors or Rotary Cutter: For cutting your fabric.

  • Pins or Clips: To hold your fabric layers together.

Instructions:

  1. Cut Your Fabric and Batting:

    • Cut two 8-inch squares of your fabric (one for the front and one for the back).

    • Cut two 8-inch squares of insulated batting.

    • If you're using cotton batting, cut one or two additional 8-inch squares.

  2. Layer Your Pieces:

    • Start with a layer of cotton fabric (right side down).

    • Add your insulated batting on top.

    • Add a layer of cotton batting (if using).

    • Place your second piece of fabric on top (right side up).

    • You should have a sandwich with the fabric on the outside and the batting on the inside.

  3. Pin or Clip the Layers:

    • Secure all the layers together with pins or clips to ensure they don't shift while sewing.

  4. Sew Around the Edges:

    • Using a 1/4-inch seam allowance, sew around the edges, leaving a small opening for turning.

  5. Turn the Pot Holder Right Side Out:

    • Turn your pot holder right side out through the opening.

    • Push out the corners to make them sharp.

  6. Close the Opening:

    • Tuck in the edges of the opening and sew it closed either by hand or with your sewing machine.

  7. Quilt Your Pot Holder:

    • To keep the layers together, you can quilt your pot holder by sewing straight lines across it. A grid pattern is both functional and attractive.

  8. Optional Hanging Loop:

    • If you’d like a hanging loop, cut a small strip of fabric, fold it in half, and sew it into the corner of your pot holder.

Now you've got yourself a handmade fabric hot plate or pot holder! It's a great project for using up fabric scraps and makes a lovely gift.

Feel free to let me know if you need more details or have any specific questions along the way. Enjoy your sewing project!

Scrappy Fabric Project.

This was a very new experience of trying this method of sewing, patchwork, quilting etc.

!.  Gather scrap fabrics.

2.  Choose which ones you'll use. (sizes and shapes vary)

3,  Get out a piece of fusible fleece, interfacing etc. to your desired size you want your project to be.  This one is approximately 7 1/2 inches.

4.   Arrange your scraps of fabric on the top of the fusible side of fusible fleece.  Avoid leaving the fusible to been seen. Press down on, once completely covered.

5.  Cut out a piece of backing for the back of approximately 7 1/2 inches.  Attach to the scrappy patchwork.

6.   Quilt accordingly as you desire. Trim

7.    Bind

This project can be used for wall hanging, mug mat, etc.
