✂️ BACK TO SCHOOL Pouch Case (Pencil, Cosmetic, etc) Sewing Project

Nothing says back to school (or back to routines!) like a fresh handmade pouch! A simple zippered pouch is one of the most useful little sewing projects—you can use it as a pencil case, a makeup pouch, or even for sewing notions.

🧵 What You’ll Need:

  • Cotton fabric (outer + lining)

  • Fusible interfacing (optional, for structure)

  • 1 zipper (7–9 inches depending on pouch size)

  • Matching thread

  • Sewing machine, scissors/rotary cutter, pins or clips

  • Measuring tape

✨ Cutting Measurements:

  • Outer fabric: 2 pieces, 9” × 5”

  • Lining fabric: 2 pieces, 9” × 5”

  • Interfacing: 2 pieces, 9” × 5” (if using)

Tip: Adjust the size for larger pouches!

🪡 Sewing Instructions:

  1. Prepare pieces: Fuse interfacing to the outer fabric if desired.

  2. Attach zipper:

    • Place one outer fabric piece right side up.

    • Lay zipper face down on top edge.

    • Place lining fabric right side down on top of zipper (like a sandwich).

    • Stitch with zipper foot.

    • Flip and press.

    • Repeat with the other side.

  3. Topstitch along zipper edges for a neat finish.

  4. Sew pouch sides:

    • Open zipper halfway.

    • Place outer fabrics right sides together, and lining fabrics right sides together.

    • Sew around edges, leaving a 2–3” gap in the bottom of the lining.

  5. Box corners (optional): To make the pouch stand up, pinch corners and sew across about 1” from tip.

  6. Turn right side out through the lining gap.

  7. Stitch the lining gap closed and push lining inside.

🎀 Personalize It!

  • Add a little fabric tab on the zipper end.

  • Mix and match fun fabrics (florals, polka dots, solids).

  • Embellish with lace, appliqué, or embroidery.

✅ Perfect For:

  • Back to school pencil cases ✏️

  • Makeup or cosmetic pouches 💄

  • Sewing kit or small craft supplies ✂️

  • Gift-giving 🎁

Fabric Coaster - The ZigZag Stitch

ZIGZAG STITCH

zigzag stitch
Sider Fusion

A zigzag stitch is a type of sewing stitch that creates a zigzag pattern rather than a straight line. It is commonly used for various purposes in sewing and quilting, including:

Uses of Zigzag Stitch

  1. Finishing Edges: Prevents fraying on the edges of fabric by encasing them.
  2. Stretching Fabric: Works well on knit fabrics, allowing seams to stretch without breaking.
  3. Decorative Purposes: Can be used creatively to add texture or design to a project.
  4. Attaching Appliques: Useful for stitching down embellishments, trims, or patches.

How to Sew a Zigzag Stitch

  1. Set Your Machine: Adjust your sewing machine to the zigzag stitch setting (usually indicated by a zigzag icon).
  2. Choose Width and Length: Adjust the width and length of the stitch according to your project requirements.
  3. Sewing Technique: Position your fabric under the presser foot and sew while guiding the fabric as needed.

Quick And Easy Project Using Zig Zag Stitches
Sider Fusion

Here’s a quick and easy project idea where you can utilize zigzag stitches: Fabric Coasters!

Fabric Coasters

Materials Needed:

  • Scrap fabrics (cotton works well)
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread (matching or contrasting)
  • Iron (optional for pressing)
  • Ruler (for cutting fabric)
  • Pins (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cut Fabric Squares:

    • Cut your fabric into 5x5 inch squares. You will need two squares for each coaster.
  2. Layer the Fabric:

    • Place one fabric square on top of the other, right sides together.
  3. Pin the Edges (optional):

    • If you want extra stability while sewing, pin the squares together.
  4. Sew with Zigzag Stitch:

    • Using a zigzag stitch, sew around the edges of the squares, leaving about a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Leave a small opening (about 2 inches) on one side so you can turn the coaster inside out.
  5. Clip Corners:

    • Carefully trim the corners of the fabric (without cutting the stitches) to reduce bulk.
  6. Turn Inside Out:

    • Turn the coaster right side out through the opening you left.
  7. Press (optional):

    • Use an iron to press the coaster flat, making sure the corners are poked out.
  8. Close the Opening:

    • Fold in the raw edges of the opening to match the stitched edges, and sew a zigzag stitch across to seal it shut.
  9. Decorate (optional):

    • You can add decorative zigzag stitches along the edges or add embellishments for a personal touch.

Finished Size:

The coasters will be approximately 4.5 x 4.5 inches after sewing.

These coasters are not only quick to make but also serve as a practical addition to your home or as great gifts! If you have any questions or need further elaboration on any step, let me know!
