Denim Bag With Birds Quilt Style

The "Square in a Square" or "Magic 4-in-1" technique was used in creating portion of this tote shape bag.

In making this tote shape bag there was 4 sets of the "Square in a Square" techniques used.  Once they are all combined and stitch together to make a larger block, you can than make the desired design that you want to make your tote bag.  I used the quilt as you go for the front of the bag by making a strip of the fabric on each sides and then a strip of the same width to make the top and bottom.  Then made the back of the bag the size of the front. Also made the lining the same size as the front and back of the bag.  Stitch of the sides and bottom of the bag.  Do the same for the lining.  With right sides together of the top of the bag of the actual bag and lining; stitch around the top of the bag.   Turn inside out through the small opening on the lining to pull through to form the bag.  Press.  Straps should be inserted as you desire. You have the options to make the bag as you so find fit.  To me it was a wonderful project to work with and make.  "Square in a Square" quilt technique. 👏👏

The “Square in a Square” and “Magic 4-in-1” techniques are popular quilting methods used to create multiple quilt blocks quickly and accurately. Here is a simple description you could use for a blog post:

Square in a Square Technique

The Square in a Square quilting technique creates a smaller square centered inside a larger square. Fabric triangles are sewn around a center square, producing a neat geometric design that works beautifully in traditional and modern quilts alike.

This method is wonderful for:

  • Quilt blocks

  • Table runners

  • Scrap quilts

  • Pillow covers

  • Wall hangings

Quilters enjoy this technique because it:

  • Uses fabric scraps efficiently

  • Adds visual interest

  • Creates precise points and angles

  • Can be arranged into many unique patterns

Popular fabric combinations include florals, solids, seasonal prints, and contrasting colors for dramatic effects.

Magic 4-in-1 Technique

The Magic 4-in-1 quilting method is a clever time-saving technique that allows quilters to create four quilt blocks at once from layered fabric squares.

This approach is especially helpful for:

  • Beginner quilters

  • Fast quilt projects

  • Charity quilts

  • Scrap fabric sewing

  • Coordinated quilt designs

Benefits of the Magic 4-in-1 method include:

  • Faster cutting and sewing

  • Matching blocks with less effort

  • Reduced fabric waste

  • Easy chain piecing

The technique is often used with half-square triangles, disappearing blocks, or square-based quilt patterns to quickly build a quilt top.

What a lovely bag project! The Square in a Square / Magic 4-in-1 technique really stands out beautifully in your design. The black fabric gives strong contrast, making the floral bird print pop nicely, and the diamond arrangement creates a modern quilted look while still feeling soft and cozy.

You could describe it on your blog like this:

Patchwork Shoulder Bag Using the “Square in a Square” Technique

This handmade shoulder bag was created using the popular “Square in a Square” or “Magic 4-in-1” quilting technique. The design features floral bird-print fabric set against a bold black background, creating eye-catching diamond shapes across the front of the bag.

The project combines quilting and sewing into a practical everyday accessory with:

  • Patchwork quilt blocks

  • A roomy interior

  • Long shoulder straps

  • Soft structured sides

  • Contrasting fabrics for visual interest

This technique is a wonderful way to use smaller fabric pieces while creating a polished and stylish bag. Each block comes together to form a geometric pattern that looks intricate but is enjoyable to sew.

Perfect for:

  • Everyday use

  • Library or craft bags

  • Gifts for sewing friends

  • Scrap fabric projects

  • Beginner-friendly quilting practice
