Making dish sponges with mesh is a wonderful Sewind dish sponges with meshsewing project — practical, reusable, and great for gifts or craft fairs. The mesh adds gentle scrubbing power while the fabric keeps them soft and absorbent.
Simple Sewing Dish Sponges With Mesh
Supplies
Cotton fabric scraps (2 pieces about 4" x 6")
Nylon mesh/netting or tulle (dish scrubber mesh works well)
Thin foam, batting, or sponge insert
Sewing machine or needle/thread
Scissors
Pins or clips
Instructions
1. Cut Your Pieces
Cut:
2 cotton fabric rectangles
1–2 pieces of mesh slightly smaller than fabric
1 sponge or batting piece
2. Layer the Sponge
Stack in this order:
Cotton fabric right side up
Mesh layer
Second cotton fabric right side down
If using batting or foam, place it behind the mesh.
3. Sew Around Edges
Sew around the sponge using a ¼" seam allowance
Leave a small opening for turning
4. Turn Right Side Out
Clip corners
Turn carefully
Insert sponge/batting if not sewn inside earlier
5. Close the Opening
Topstitch all around the sponge
This also helps keep layers from shifting
Optional Ideas
✨ Add:
Quilted lines
A hanging loop
Fun floral or fruit prints
Double mesh on one side for extra scrubbing
Best Fabrics
100% cotton
Terry cloth
Old towels
Cotton flannel
Avoid very delicate mesh that may tear quickly.
Care
Rinse after use
Machine wash in warm water
Air dry or tumble dry low
These make lovely eco-friendly gifts and are excellent for using fabric scraps from quilting projects.
