The Hot Placemat and Hot Pad has insul bright heat resistant batting in it for the purpose of holding hot stuff.
It was made in the general basic of making a potholder. 2 pieces of fabric size of your choice in a square. 1 piece of insul bright of the same size. Place right sides together and then the insul bright on top. Pin or clip. Stitch and pivot on each corner, leave about 1 - 2 inches unstitched. Press. Turn inside out. Press. Top stitch. Quilt option to quilt stitch corner to corner making a X look in the middle.

Absolutely. This would make a lovely addition to your sewing-project posts, especially because it is a simple, practical project that can be made with fabric of your choice. The photo also clearly shows the optional corner-to-corner quilting that creates the “X” design in the center.
Here is a polished blog post you can use:
Hot Placemat and Hot Pad | Sewing Project
A Simple Sewing Project Using Insul-Bright
Sometimes a simple sewing project can be both useful and pretty. This Hot Placemat and Hot Pad was made using the basic construction of a potholder, with the addition of Insul-Bright for insulation.
It is a project that can be made in a variety of sizes, depending on how you plan to use it.
Use it as a hot pad for pots and dishes, a small hot placemat, or make several to have handy around the kitchen.
The Sewing Project
For this project, I used two pieces of fabric and one piece of Insul-Bright.
The fabric I chose has a lovely blue and white design, and I decided to add a little quilting to the finished piece.
The center X-shaped quilting is optional, but I like the extra detail it gives to the project.
What You Will Need
2 pieces of fabric — cut into equal-sized squares
1 piece of Insul-Bright — cut to the same size
Thread
Sewing machine
Pins or sewing clips
Scissors or rotary cutter
Iron
Cutting Your Pieces
Cut:
2 fabric squares
1 Insul-Bright square
The size is completely up to you, depending on whether you want a small hot pad or a larger hot placemat.
Try making different sizes for different uses.
How I Made It
Place the two fabric pieces right sides together.
Place the Insul-Bright on top of the fabric layers.
Pin or clip the layers together.
Stitch around the four sides, pivoting at each corner.
Leave approximately a 1–2 inch opening along one side. This opening will be used for turning the project right side out.
Press the sewn piece.
Carefully turn it right side out through the opening.
Press again, making sure the edges are neatly pushed out.
Topstitch around the outside edges, which also closes the opening.
Optional Quilting
For a little extra detail, you can quilt the piece from corner to corner.
Sew diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner, then repeat from the other corner.
This creates an “X” in the middle of the hot pad.
The quilting also helps hold the layers together.
A Project You Can Make Your Own
One of the things I like about this project is that there are so many ways to customize it.
You can:
Use leftover fabric or scraps
Make different sizes
Mix and match fabrics
Add decorative quilting
Make a matching set for your kitchen
Make them as useful handmade gifts
It is also a great way to use some of those fabrics you have been saving for the right project.
Featuring Insul-Bright
For this project, I used Insul-Bright Needlepunched Insulated Lining.
