How I Made a Felt Pouch | Easy Sewing Project for Beginners

 ChatGpt

Good afternoon! 🌷 Your green felt pouch is lovely! The little white embroidered flower gives it a sweet, simple finish, and I think this is a wonderful project to share on your Sewing With Shirley-Ann Pearman blog, especially during the season when felt is popular for crafts and handmade gifts.

Here is a polished blog post ready for you to copy into Blogger, with your Amazon product link and affiliate disclosure included.

How I Made a Felt Pouch | An Easy Sewing Project for Beginners

Welcome to Sewing With Shirley-Ann Pearman!

Today, I am sharing a little sewing project that I made several months ago but had not yet featured on my blog — a simple green felt pouch with a zipper and a little embroidered flower.

Since felt sheets are often used for seasonal crafts, decorations, handmade gifts, and other creative projects, I thought this would be a good time to share how I made mine.

The best part is that you do not need a lot of materials to make this pouch. It is an easy, beginner-friendly project that can also be enjoyed by more experienced sewing enthusiasts.

My Finished Felt Pouch

I chose a lovely deep green felt and added a small white embroidered flower to give the pouch a little character. I also used a matching zipper that I already had in my sewing notions.

It is a simple design, but sometimes the simplest sewing projects are the most enjoyable!

Materials I Used

Here is what I used to make my felt pouch:

  • One sheet of green felt, approximately 8 x 11 inches

  • One zipper that matched the width of the felt

  • Matching sewing thread

  • Embroidery floss for the little flower

  • Sewing machine

  • Hand-sewing needle

  • Scissors

  • Pins or sewing clips

  • Ruler or measuring tape

I purchased my felt sheet from the Arts and Crafts Department at Gibbons in Bermuda. The sheet measured approximately 8 x 11 inches.

You can also use felt sheets from your local craft shop or purchase them online.

How I Made the Felt Pouch

Step 1: Prepare the Felt

I started with my sheet of felt, approximately 8 x 11 inches, and folded it in half.

Felt is convenient for small projects because it does not fray in the same way as many woven fabrics. This makes it a useful material for beginners who are learning to sew.

Step 2: Choose the Zipper

I searched through my sewing notions and found a zipper that was a suitable length for the width of my felt.

Before sewing, check that the zipper fits the opening and that it can be positioned neatly along the folded edge.

Step 3: Insert and Stitch the Zipper

I inserted the zipper into the top opening of the pouch and stitched it into place using my sewing machine.

After attaching the zipper, I topstitched along the edges to help keep the felt lying neatly beside the zipper and to give the top a finished appearance.

Take your time when sewing near the zipper teeth, and move the zipper pull out of the way when necessary.

Step 4: Sew the Side Seams

You can sew the side seams before or after attaching the zipper, depending on the method you prefer.

I stitched the sides together using approximately a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

Make sure the zipper is open at least partway before closing the sides, so that you can turn the pouch right side out afterward.

Step 5: Box the Corners (Optional)

I decided to use another little sewing technique from my sewing knowledge — boxing the corners.

This step is optional, but it helps give the pouch a little depth instead of leaving it completely flat.

To box the corners, flatten each bottom corner so that the side seam aligns with the bottom fold. Stitch across the corner at the depth you want, then trim away any excess felt if necessary.

The wider the boxed corners, the more depth your pouch will have.

Step 6: Add a Little Embroidery

For the finishing touch, I found a small amount of embroidery floss among my sewing notions and used it to hand-embroider a little white flower on the front.

This simple embellishment added a decorative detail without making the project complicated.

You could personalize your own pouch with a flower, initials, a small heart, buttons, or another design of your choice.

Step 7: Finish Your Pouch

Once the seams and embroidery were completed, my felt pouch was ready to use!

I was pleased with how this little project turned out. It is a reminder that you can create something useful and attractive with a small piece of felt and a few supplies already in your sewing room.

Ideas for Using Your Felt Pouch

A small felt pouch like this can be used for:

  • Keeping sewing notions together

  • Storing small craft supplies

  • Carrying everyday little essentials

  • Organizing items in a handbag

  • Making a handmade gift

  • Creating seasonal or holiday-themed pouches

You can experiment with different felt colours, zipper styles, and embroidered decorations to make each pouch unique.

One little tip: because your felt is approximately 8 x 11 inches, the finished pouch will be compact and useful for small essentials. Your optional boxed corners are a nice detail to mention because they show readers how to give a simple flat pouch a little more room.

I hope your readers enjoy this lovely little felt project! ❤️

How I Made The Felt Pouch

I made this several months ago and had not really blog posted it and thought I can blog post it now as Felt Sheets are used a lot during this season of the year.

Here is how to make it.

I purchased 1(one) sheet of felt from Gibbons in Bermuda, Arts And Craft department.  The sheet was approximately 8 x 11 inches and with that size I folded it in half.  I then found in my notions a matching zipper and appropriate size to the width of the felt sheet.  Inserted the zipper accordingly and top stitched.  You can either before or after stitching the zipper in place stitch each side together at 1/4 inch seam.  This part is optional but I did use and that is the sewing pattern of boxing the corners to give it a bit of depth.  I also had in my notions a little bit of embroidery hand sewing floss to which I embroidered a little flower to enhance it a bit.  It is a wonderful easy friendly project and recommend it as a good sewing craft for beginners as well as the advanced experienced.

Happy Sewing

I  purchased these rings from Amazon and tried them out on these two sewing projects at the spare of the moment, after wrestling with my sewing machine to complete them.  I had to work through the sewing machine jamming a lot, along with a loud noisy sound.  Sometimes I even had to hand crank the sewing with the handwheel to get it done.

Absolutely. This would make a lovely addition to your sewing-project posts, especially because it is a simple, practical project that can be made with fabric of your choice. The photo also clearly shows the optional corner-to-corner quilting that creates the “X” design in the center.

Here is a polished blog post you can use:

Hot Placemat and Hot Pad | Sewing Project

A Simple Sewing Project Using Insul-Bright

Sometimes a simple sewing project can be both useful and pretty. This Hot Placemat and Hot Pad was made using the basic construction of a potholder, with the addition of Insul-Bright for insulation.

It is a project that can be made in a variety of sizes, depending on how you plan to use it.

Use it as a hot pad for pots and dishes, a small hot placemat, or make several to have handy around the kitchen.

The Sewing Project

For this project, I used two pieces of fabric and one piece of Insul-Bright.

The fabric I chose has a lovely blue and white design, and I decided to add a little quilting to the finished piece.

The center X-shaped quilting is optional, but I like the extra detail it gives to the project.

What You Will Need

  • 2 pieces of fabric — cut into equal-sized squares

  • 1 piece of Insul-Bright — cut to the same size

  • Thread

  • Sewing machine

  • Pins or sewing clips

  • Scissors or rotary cutter

  • Iron

Cutting Your Pieces

Cut:

2 fabric squares
1 Insul-Bright square

The size is completely up to you, depending on whether you want a small hot pad or a larger hot placemat.

Try making different sizes for different uses.

How I Made It

  1. Place the two fabric pieces right sides together.

  2. Place the Insul-Bright on top of the fabric layers.

  3. Pin or clip the layers together.

  4. Stitch around the four sides, pivoting at each corner.

  5. Leave approximately a 1–2 inch opening along one side. This opening will be used for turning the project right side out.

  6. Press the sewn piece.

  7. Carefully turn it right side out through the opening.

  8. Press again, making sure the edges are neatly pushed out.

  9. Topstitch around the outside edges, which also closes the opening.

Optional Quilting

For a little extra detail, you can quilt the piece from corner to corner.

Sew diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner, then repeat from the other corner.

This creates an “X” in the middle of the hot pad.

The quilting also helps hold the layers together.

A Project You Can Make Your Own

One of the things I like about this project is that there are so many ways to customize it.

You can:

  • Use leftover fabric or scraps

  • Make different sizes

  • Mix and match fabrics

  • Add decorative quilting

  • Make a matching set for your kitchen

  • Make them as useful handmade gifts

It is also a great way to use some of those fabrics you have been saving for the right project.

Featuring Insul-Bright

For this project, I used Insul-Bright Needlepunched Insulated Lining.

Final Thoughts

This Hot Placemat and Hot Pad is a basic sewing project with lots of possibilities.

A little fabric, some Insul-Bright, thread and a sewing machine can turn into something useful for your home. ❤️🧡
