KNOWLEDGE BASE OF BASICS SERIES

11. Cutting Mat

A cutting mat is a protective, durable surface used when cutting fabric with a rotary cutter.

Most cutting mats are self-healing, meaning the surface closes up after being cut, helping to extend the life of the mat. They are usually marked with measurement lines, grids, angles, and measurements to help you cut fabric accurately.

Why Is a Cutting Mat Important?

A good cutting mat helps to:

  • Protect your table or work surface from rotary cutter blades.

  • Keep fabric cutting accurate and consistent.

  • Make it easier to cut straight lines and precise shapes.

  • Work together with a rotary cutter and quilting ruler.

  • Reduce damage to your cutting blade and work surface.

Choosing a Cutting Mat

Cutting mats come in many sizes. Choose one that fits comfortably in your sewing area while giving you enough room to work with your fabric.

For quilting and patchwork, a mat with a clear grid and angle markings can be especially helpful.

Tip: Always use a sharp rotary cutter and a suitable quilting ruler with your cutting mat, and avoid using the mat as a general-purpose work surface for things that could damage it.

A cutting mat is one of those basic sewing tools that can make fabric preparation safer, easier, and much more accurate.

๐Ÿงต A Cutting Mat I Recommend

If you are looking for a larger cutting mat for quilting and sewing projects, the OLFA 24" x 36" Self-Healing Rotary Cutting Mat (RM-MG) is one option worth considering.

This double-sided green cutting mat features:

  • 24" x 36" large cutting surface

  • Self-healing surface

  • Triple-layer construction

  • Double-sided grid

  • Designed for use with rotary cutters

OLFA 24x36" Self-Healing Rotary Cutting Mat (RM-MG)
The OLFA RM-MG is a must-have for quilters and crafters who need a large, reliable cutting surface. Here's what makes it stand out:
Self-Healing Surface: Tiny PVC particles press back together after each cut, keeping the mat smooth and extending the life of your rotary blades — cut in the same spot dozens of times and it stays like new.
Double-Sided Design: One side features yellow grid lines (with angle markings — perfect for cutting true bias strips!) for precise, detailed work; the solid green reverse side is ideal for general cutting.
Large 24" x 36" Size: Handles big quilting projects, cutting multiple fabric layers, bias strips, squares, triangles, and pattern pieces with ease.
Triple-Layer Construction: Heat-welded for long life and durability at just 1.5mm thick and 2.3 lbs — sturdy yet manageable on your sewing table.
Care Tips: Store flat, away from direct sunlight to prevent warping. Hand wash only. Use an art gum eraser to remove any particles stuck in the mat.
Best For: Quilting, sewing, pattern cutting, scrapbooking, and general crafting.
As the inventor of the rotary cutter in 1979, OLFA sets the standard — pairing their mat with OLFA rotary cutters and blades delivers the best results.

Remember: Always place your cutting mat on a stable, flat surface and use it with a rotary cutter and quilting ruler for safer and more accurate cutting.

Here are photos of my cutting mat on a table of a cutting mat sized at 24 inches by 36 inches.

A cutting mat is also a new tool in sewing I have gotten to become familar with in the last few years.  While sewing in the capacity of cutting out from paper pattern to which I used scissors.  However, now that I gotten more so in to scraps, patchwork and quilting, the cutting mat is used all the time with a rotary cutter.  It is a wonderful too to add to your sewing materials if you don't already have one.

Essential Companion Tools for Fabric Cutting
  • Rotary Cutter: A rolling circular razor blade that cuts through multiple layers of fabric quickly and accurately. [1, 2, 3]
  • Clear Acrylic Quilting Ruler: A heavy, transparent ruler with grid markings used to measure fabric and provide a firm, safe edge for the rotary cutter to run along.
  • Fabric Scissors / Shears: Sharp, long-bladed fabric scissors used for trimming threads, curved edges, or detail work where a rotary cutter isn't practical.
  • Fabric Weights: Heavy metal or covered weights placed on fabric and paper patterns to keep them from shifting on the mat without puncturing the material with pins.
  • Replacement Blades & Storage Case: Fresh rotary blades are vital because a dull blade slips on fabric, and a safe disposal case keeps old blades from damaging your workspace or hands.
  • Seam Ripper: A small handheld tool with a pointed tip and a tiny blade used to quickly pick out and undo incorrect stitches. [1]

Routine Maintenance & Cleaning
  • Clear out fuzz and fibers: Use a rubber eraser or a lint roller regularly across the surface to pull trapped fabric lint out of the tiny cuts, which lets the mat properly self-heal. [1, 2]
  • Wash with mild soap: Clean the surface using cool or room-temperature water and a few drops of mild dish soap with a soft cloth or soft brush, then rinse clean. Never use hot water. [1, 2, 3]
  • Re-hydrate the mat: Give your mat a cool water and white vinegar bath (about 1/4 cup of white vinegar per gallon of cool water) once or twice a year for 15 to 20 minutes. This restores internal moisture, keeping the PVC soft and preventing cracking. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Habits to Prevent Damage
  • Store flat always: Lay the mat completely flat under a table or on a wide shelf. Never roll it up or stand it on edge, as this warps the shape and forces cuts to stay permanently open. [1, 2]
  • Avoid heat sources: Keep the mat away from direct sunlight, heating vents, or hot cars, and never iron on your mat or set hot coffee mugs down on it, which causes irreversible warping. [1, 2]
  • Rotate your workspace: Break the habit of cutting in the exact same spot; spin or flip the mat regularly (using both sides) to distribute the wear evenly. [1, 2, 3]
  • Use sharp blades only: Change your rotary cutter blades frequently; dull blades force you to press harder and saw into the mat, creating deep, unhealable grooves. [1, 2]

Applique

KNOWLEDGE BASE OF BASICS SERIES

APPLIQUE

Applique:  Pieces cut from various materials such as fabric, felt, and leather, which are then sewn onto garments, pillows, or other items to create a decorative effect.

10. Appliquรฉ

A decorative sewing technique where shapes are stitched onto a background fabric to create beautiful designs.

๐Ÿงต Knowledge Base of Basics Series

10. Appliquรฉ

What is Appliquรฉ?

Appliquรฉ is a decorative sewing technique in which pieces of fabric are cut into shapes and stitched onto a larger background fabric to create a design or picture. The word appliquรฉ comes from the French word appliquer, meaning "to apply."

This technique has been used for centuries to decorate clothing, quilts, home dรฉcor, and other fabric projects. From simple hearts and flowers to detailed landscapes and intricate quilt blocks, appliquรฉ allows endless creative possibilities.

Common Types of Appliquรฉ

  • Hand Appliquรฉ – Shapes are sewn onto the background by hand using nearly invisible stitches.

  • Machine Appliquรฉ – A sewing machine is used with decorative or straight stitches for a faster finish.

  • Raw-Edge Appliquรฉ – Fabric edges are left unfinished and stitched down, creating a slightly textured appearance.

  • Turned-Edge Appliquรฉ – The edges of each shape are turned under before stitching for a neat, polished finish.

  • Fusible Appliquรฉ – Fusible web is used to temporarily bond the fabric shapes to the background before stitching.

Helpful Tips

  • Choose fabrics that contrast with the background so your design stands out.

  • Press fabric pieces before cutting for more accurate shapes.

  • Use sharp embroidery scissors or small fabric scissors for precise cutting.

  • Stabilize the background fabric when needed to prevent puckering.

  • Practice on small projects before creating larger quilt designs.

Fun Fact

Many traditional quilt patterns feature appliquรฉ designs, including flowers, leaves, birds, stars, baskets, and seasonal motifs. Modern quilters also use appliquรฉ to create personalized quilts with names, letters, and custom artwork.

Knowledge Base Tip:
Appliquรฉ is a wonderful way to add personality and artistic detail to quilts, bags, pillows, wall hangings, clothing, and countless other sewing projects. Whether sewn by hand or machine, it is a technique that combines creativity with craftsmanship.

You could also pair this post with a simple illustration showing a background fabric square with a flower, heart, butterfly, and leaf appliquรฉd onto it to help beginners visualize the technique.

Appliquรฉ comes in three main forms—ready-to-use patches, embroidered lace trim, and DIY kits—each with different tools and attachment methods. Your choice depends on whether you want quick finishes or detailed handwork.

Appliquรฉ comes in three main forms—ready-made patches and trims (iron-on or sew-on for quick projects), DIY kits with all materials, and decorative furniture onlays. Your sewing skills mean patches and trims let you customize garments and quilts fast.

Appliquรฉs come in three main forms—pre-cut patches you sew or iron on, complete felt kits with instructions, or decorative trims you attach to garments. Your choice depends on what you're building.

Applique scissors come in distinct blade styles—duckbill, curved, and detail—each designed for a specific cutting task. Duckbill shears protect fabric underneath while you trim applique, while curved blades excel at close detail work and embroidery. Match the blade to your main applique technique.

Applique scissors have angled or curved blades designed to sit flat on fabric for undercuts without snagging—the offset handle and blade shape are what matter most here, not general fabric scissors.

Here are a few photos which Applique has been done in a basic form of way, by tracing an object and cutting it out and fusing it with fusible fleece.  With it then positioned on a piece of a block fabric with iron on interfacing.  The zig zag stitch was then done like a satin stitch around the edges, all as seen here in this video and photos.

Binding

 KNOWLEDGE BASE OF BASICS SERIES

BINDING

9. Binding

The finishing touch that protects the edges of quilts and other sewn projects

Here is a complete, pre-formatted blog post draft tailored for your Knowledge Base of Basics Series on Sewing & Quilting by Shirley Ann. It balances professional technique breakdowns with a scannable format, perfectly highlighting your featured tools.

KNOWLEDGE BASE OF BASICS SERIES

9. Binding

Welcome back to our Knowledge Base of Basics Series! Today, we are diving into one of the most rewarding steps of any sewing or quilting project: Binding.
Often called the frame of a quilt, binding is the finishing touch that protects the raw edges of quilts and other sewn projects from fraying and wear over time. Whether you prefer to make your own custom bindings from fabric scraps or reach for a convenient pre-made option, having the right tools makes all the difference in achieving crisp, flat edges and perfect corners.

Master the Craft: Essential Binding Tools

To help you achieve professional results on your next project, here are a few highly recommended tools and supplies that streamline the binding process.
HONEYSEW Single Double Fold Bias Tape Maker Tool Kit Set, 6MM/9MM/12MM/18MM/25MM Fabric Bias Tape Maker Tools 5 Sizes DIY Sewing Bias Tape Makers For
  • All-in-One Solution: This comprehensive kit features 5 different tape maker sizes (6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 18mm, and 25mm) ["1.2.4"] to handle any project scale.
  • No More Burnt Fingers: It safely guides and folds fabric strips into single or double-fold bindings while you iron ["1.2.4"].
  • Bonus Accessories: Comes complete with a handy wooden awl, an adjustable snap-on binding foot, quilting pins, and fabric clips ["1.2.4"].
Wrights Double Fold Quilt Binding
  • Ready to Sew: Perfect for quick, professional quilt borders and apparel trims without the hassle of cutting and pressing ["1.4.1"].
  • Durable Blend: Made from a colorfast 55% polyester and 45% cotton blend that requires no initial ironing ["1.3.1", "1.4.1"].
  • Charming Hue: The soft light blue shade brings a clean, classic framing accent to baby quilts and home decor.
Wrights Double Fold Bias Tape
  • Time-Saving Convenience: Skip the cutting mat entirely with pre-folded, machine-washable binding tape ready for immediate deployment ["1.3.1", "1.4.1"].
  • Ultra-Versatile Neutral: The subtle "Oyster" off-white tone seamlessly blends with almost any fabric palette.
  • Crisp Borders: Offers excellent structural strength to cleanly enclose multi-layered quilt sandwiches ["1.3.1", "1.4.1"].

3 Quick Tips for Perfect Binding

  1. Cut on the Bias for Curves: If your project features curved edges, always cut your fabric strips at a 45-degree angle (on the bias) to allow the fabric to stretch and conform smoothly ["1.2.3", "1.2.6"].
  2. Miter Your Corners: When sewing binding to a square quilt, use the fold-and-flip mitered technique to create clean, sharp 90-degree corners ["1.1.7"].
  3. Clip, Don’t Pin: Use the craft clips included in your tool kits to hold thick layers of batting, backing, and binding together without warping or poking your fingers ["1.1.5", "1.2.4"].

It is completely normal to get overwhelmed by mitered corners. Because there are so many different folding methods out there, it is easy for your brain to mix them up while you are mid-project.
To help both you and your readers, here is a highly visual, 3-step mental trick called the "Up, Fold, Down" method. It is the most reliable way to lock the muscle memory into your brain.
You can drop this tutorial section directly into your blog draft right above the "Quick Tips" section.

The "Up, Fold, Down" Method for Perfect Mitered Corners

When machine-sewing binding onto the front of your quilt, stop sewing exactly 1/4-inch before you reach the end of the corner. Backstitch, cut your threads, and take the quilt out from under the needle. [1, 2]
Now, perform these three simple steps to create a perfect 45-degree mitered corner every single time:

1. UP: The 45-Degree Angle

  • The Action: Take your loose binding strip and fold it straight UP and away from the quilt.
  • What to look for: The right edge of your binding strip should now align perfectly flush with the raw edge of the next side of the quilt you are about to sew. You will see a neat 45-degree diagonal fold form right in the corner. [3]

2. FOLD: Finger Press the Corner

  • The Action: Place your index finger firmly right on top of that 45-degree diagonal fold in the corner to hold it flat against the table.

3. DOWN: Align the New Edge

  • The Action: While keeping that corner pressed flat, bring the binding strip straight back DOWN over your finger toward the next side of the quilt. [4, 5]
  • What to look for: The top fold of your binding strip must align perfectly flush with the top raw edge of the quilt side you just finished sewing.
Secure this corner fold immediately with one of the craft clips from your HONEYSEW Kit.

Ready to Sew Again

Place your quilt back under the machine. Lower your needle exactly 1/4-inch down from the top edge right through all the layers, and sew down the new side. When you flip the binding to the back of the quilt later, the corner will automatically pop into a crisp, beautiful, professional mitered frame! [6, 7]

Would you like to add some specific advice on how to hand-stitch vs. machine-stitch the back of the binding to finish it off, or is this "Up, Fold, Down" trick exactly what you needed?
What is your preferred method for finishing a quilt? Do you love the look of hand-stitched binding, or do you prefer the speed of machine sewing? Let me know in the comments below!

Would you like me to add a step-by-step tutorial section on how to sew a mitered corner, or adjust the tone of the blog post to better match your usual writing style?

Quilt Batting

 KNOWLEDGE BASE OF BASIC SERIES

Quilt Batting

8. Quilt Batting

Explore the different types of batting and how each affects the warmth, weight, and appearance of a quilt.

Like a rotary cutter, as said in my previous blog posting, I just started using batting a few years ago.  Because I sewed only in the capacity of clothes for myself I only used interfacing and had not become acustom to batting.

Now I am accustom to using battings in making pouches, bags, quilting etc. and enjoy the many different effects produced on each project.

Fusible Fleece is one I used most of all on mug rugs, placemat, cozies, bags, pouches etc.

Insul Bright is another one I have come across to use when making pot holders, hot plates etc.  This may some times maybe thick and difficult for the needle to transmit through.  I had to find the needle that worked with this type of batting.

Since using batting I have found out that I have to do more cleaning chores of the bobbin area of my sewing machine.

My first time using batting was with a Quilt As You Go  Kit which included marked lines and design indications, which probably good for beginners.

Please refer to the resource set out below which can be helpful to all whether you are beginner or advance.

Thank you

Good morning! I'm doing well, thank you. I hope you're having a wonderful morning too. Here's the next installment for your Knowledge Base of Basics Series.

๐Ÿงต Knowledge Base of Basics Series

8. Quilt Batting

Quilt batting is the soft layer placed between the quilt top and the backing fabric. It provides warmth, thickness, and texture, and plays an important role in the finished look and feel of your quilt.

There are several types of batting, each with its own advantages:

  • Cotton Batting – A popular choice for traditional quilts. It is breathable, lies flat, and gives quilts a soft, natural look with a slightly crinkled appearance after washing.

  • Polyester Batting – Lightweight, lofty, and very durable. It provides extra warmth without adding much weight and resists shrinking.

  • Cotton/Polyester Blend – Combines the softness of cotton with the resilience and loft of polyester, making it a versatile option for many quilting projects.

  • Wool Batting – Warm, lightweight, and naturally breathable. It creates beautiful stitch definition and is excellent for heirloom quilts.

  • Bamboo Batting – Soft, breathable, and eco-friendly. It drapes well and has a silky feel, making it ideal for lightweight quilts.

Choosing the Right Batting

When selecting batting, consider:

  • The purpose of the quilt (bed quilt, wall hanging, baby quilt, or table runner).

  • The amount of warmth you want.

  • The desired loft (thin, medium, or thick).

  • How closely you plan to quilt, as each batting has recommended quilting distances.

Sewing Tip

Always smooth the batting before layering your quilt sandwich to help prevent wrinkles or folds. Basting your quilt securely with pins, spray, or thread makes quilting easier and helps keep all three layers aligned.

Knowledge Base Tip: Batting may not be visible in a finished quilt, but it has a huge impact on comfort, durability, and the overall appearance of your project. Choosing the right batting is just as important as selecting your fabrics.

This topic also pairs well with an affiliate section featuring quilt batting, batting rolls, batting tape, basting spray, and safety pins for quilting. Wishing you a happy day of sewing and quilting!

Quilt Batting◻️◻️

Explore the different types of batting and how each affects the warmth, weight, and appearance of a quilt.

Choosing the right quilt batting depends on how you want your finished quilt to feel, look, and drape. Different fibers alter the warmth, weight, and fluffiness (loft) of the blanket. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Cotton Batting

  • Warmth: Medium warmth, highly breathable, and comfortable for year-round use.
  • Weight: Heavy and dense, providing a comforting, weighted feeling.
  • Appearance: Low loft (flat). It shrinks slightly when washed, creating a classic, antique, crinkled look. [5, 6, 7, 8, 9]

Polyester Batting

  • Warmth: Very warm because synthetic fibers trap heat, though it is less breathable than natural choices.
  • Weight: Exceptionally lightweight despite its thickness.
  • Appearance: High loft (puffy and thick). It does not shrink, keeping the quilt top smooth and wrinkle-free. [10, 11, 12, 13, 14]

Wool Batting

  • Warmth: High warmth because it naturally insulates, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer.
  • Weight: Medium weight, feeling light but exceptionally cozy.
  • Appearance: Medium-to-high loft. It has excellent "spring back" memory that highlights your quilting lines with beautiful stitch definition. [15, 16, 17, 18, 19]

Bamboo & Blends (e.g., 80/20 Cotton/Poly)

  • Warmth: Medium warmth, mirroring the qualities of pure cotton but with improved airflow.
  • Weight: Light-to-medium weight, offering a highly flexible feel.
  • Appearance: Low loft. Bamboo is famous for creating the softest, most fluid drape that matches the body's shape perfectly. [20, 21, 22, 23, 24]

If you'd like to narrow this down, tell me:
  • What is the intended use for the quilt? (e.g., a heavy winter bedspread, a lightweight baby blanket, a wall hanging)
  • Will you be hand quilting or machine quilting?
  • Do you prefer a flat, crinkly look or a puffy, smooth look?
