What is Appliqué?
Appliqué is a decorative sewing technique in which pieces of fabric are cut into shapes and stitched onto a larger background fabric to create a design or picture. The word appliqué comes from the French word appliquer, meaning "to apply."
This technique has been used for centuries to decorate clothing, quilts, home décor, and other fabric projects. From simple hearts and flowers to detailed landscapes and intricate quilt blocks, appliqué allows endless creative possibilities.
Common Types of Appliqué
Hand Appliqué – Shapes are sewn onto the background by hand using nearly invisible stitches.
Machine Appliqué – A sewing machine is used with decorative or straight stitches for a faster finish.
Raw-Edge Appliqué – Fabric edges are left unfinished and stitched down, creating a slightly textured appearance.
Turned-Edge Appliqué – The edges of each shape are turned under before stitching for a neat, polished finish.
Fusible Appliqué – Fusible web is used to temporarily bond the fabric shapes to the background before stitching.
Helpful Tips
Choose fabrics that contrast with the background so your design stands out.
Press fabric pieces before cutting for more accurate shapes.
Use sharp embroidery scissors or small fabric scissors for precise cutting.
Stabilize the background fabric when needed to prevent puckering.
Practice on small projects before creating larger quilt designs.
Fun Fact
Many traditional quilt patterns feature appliqué designs, including flowers, leaves, birds, stars, baskets, and seasonal motifs. Modern quilters also use appliqué to create personalized quilts with names, letters, and custom artwork.

Appliqué comes in three main forms—ready-made patches and trims (iron-on or sew-on for quick projects), DIY kits with all materials, and decorative furniture onlays. Your sewing skills mean patches and trims let you customize garments and quilts fast.
Appliqués come in three main forms—pre-cut patches you sew or iron on, complete felt kits with instructions, or decorative trims you attach to garments. Your choice depends on what you're building.
Applique scissors come in distinct blade styles—duckbill, curved, and detail—each designed for a specific cutting task. Duckbill shears protect fabric underneath while you trim applique, while curved blades excel at close detail work and embroidery. Match the blade to your main applique technique.
Applique scissors have angled or curved blades designed to sit flat on fabric for undercuts without snagging—the offset handle and blade shape are what matter most here, not general fabric scissors.

Here are a few photos which Applique has been done in a basic form of way, by tracing an object and cutting it out and fusing it with fusible fleece. With it then positioned on a piece of a block fabric with iron on interfacing. The zig zag stitch was then done like a satin stitch around the edges, all as seen here in this video and photos.
