Hand Sewing And Hand Embroidery Project

Hand Sewing

Project

Pouch Made In Patchwork Method From Scraps Of Fabric And All Sewn By Hand Sewing.

If you been following through with the the few of my blog posting you would have read were my sewing machine has encountered some unfortunate complications and is out of commission and needs repairing, as well as my iron which totally burned out the same week.

This week I thought I will stop feeling sorry for myself and the sewing machine and do work just the same way by doing a small sized project by hand sewing.

I started by having a few small sized scraps sewn into patchwork until it reached approximately 9 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches, with the seam allowances 1/4 inch.
I then cut out a piece of fabric the same size for lining purposes.  Hand stitched them together with rights sides together all the way around leaving approximately 2 inch opening to allow it to be turned inside out.  Optional you can use pinking shears to protect against fray.  Turn inside out.

Fold to form a flap like envelope look.

Sew or stitch up the side by using a slip stitch along the sides of pouch.

Optional.  For top stitching the pouch, I used a basic embroidery stitch.

For closure I used velcro, but snaps can be used.

KNOWLEDGE BASE OF BASICS SERIES BATTING

KNOWLEDGE BASE OF BASICS SERIES

BATTING

KNOWLEDGE BASE OF BASICS SERIES

BATTING

When you hear the word batting in quilting and sewing, it refers to the soft layer placed between the quilt top and the backing.

Batting is what gives a quilt its warmth, softness, body, and texture. It can also be used in bags, placemats, potholders, table runners, and many other sewing projects when you want a little extra padding or structure.

What Is Batting?

Batting, sometimes called wadding, is a layer of material designed to be used inside a quilt or other sewn project.

A basic quilt sandwich consists of:

Quilt Top + Batting + Backing

The batting is placed between the decorative quilt top and the backing fabric before the layers are quilted together.

Why Is Batting Important?

Batting can give your project:

  • Warmth

  • Softness

  • Thickness

  • Body and structure

  • A little extra cushioning

  • Texture and dimension

The type of batting you choose can change the look and feel of your finished project.

Different Types of Batting

Batting comes in several different materials and thicknesses.

Some common choices include:

Cotton Batting
Cotton batting is popular for quilts because it has a natural feel and gives quilts a soft, comfortable drape. It is often a good choice for everyday quilts.

Polyester Batting
Polyester batting is lightweight and can provide more loft, meaning the finished quilt may have a fuller, puffier appearance.

Cotton/Polyester Blend
A blend combines characteristics of both cotton and polyester and can be a versatile choice for many quilting projects.

Wool Batting
Wool batting is warm and lightweight and is especially useful when warmth is an important part of the finished quilt.

Loft Matters

You may also see the word loft when shopping for batting.

Loft refers to the thickness or fluffiness of the batting.

  • Low loft — thinner and flatter

  • Medium loft — a little more thickness

  • High loft — thicker and fluffier

The loft you choose depends on the type of project and the appearance you want.

Choosing Batting for Your Project

Before choosing batting, think about what you are making.

For a quilt, you may want to consider:

  • How warm you want the quilt to be

  • How thick you want it to look

  • How much drape you want

  • How you plan to quilt it

  • Whether the batting can be machine washed

  • The manufacturer's recommended quilting distance

For smaller sewing projects, batting can also provide structure and cushioning.

For example, batting can be useful in:

  • Pot holders

  • Hot pads

  • Placemats

  • Table runners

  • Quilted bags

  • Cosmetic bags

  • Pouches

  • Mug rugs

  • Small quilted projects

Batting and Heat-Resistant Projects

For projects such as potholders and hot pads, the type of batting matters.

Regular quilt batting is not automatically heat resistant.

If your project will be used with hot dishes or cookware, consider using a product specifically designed for heat protection, such as Insul-Bright or another appropriate heat-resistant material, according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Preparing Your Batting

Before cutting your batting, check the instructions on the package.

Some batting may need to be prewashed or handled in a particular way, while other types can be used directly from the package.

When making a quilt sandwich, make sure the batting is large enough to extend beyond the edges of the quilt top. This gives you room for quilting and trimming the finished quilt.

Don't Throw Away Those Batting Scraps!

If you do a lot of quilting, you will probably end up with batting scraps.

Keep them!

Small pieces can be useful for smaller projects such as:

  • Mini quilts

  • Mug rugs

  • Potholders

  • Hot pads

  • Small bags

  • Pouches

  • Coasters

  • Quilt-as-you-go projects

Just like fabric scraps, batting scraps can have another life in your sewing room.

A Simple Way to Remember

Think of batting as the middle layer.

TOP → Batting → BACK

It is the layer that helps give a quilt its warmth, softness, thickness, and quilted texture.

Final Thoughts

Batting may not be the most visible part of a quilt, but it plays an important role in the finished project.

Choosing the right batting can make a difference in how your quilt looks, feels, hangs, and performs.

Whether you are making a large quilt or a small quilted sewing project, understanding batting is another useful piece of sewing and quilting knowledge to add to your toolbox.

Missing My Sewing Machine

Missing My Sewing Machine

A blog posting from a year ago.

https://sewingquiltingbyshirleyann.blogspot.com/2025/10/tote-bag.html

This posting from Tiktok was brought to my attention of a year ago.  It is the first time of me of hearing something different in the sewing machine which was an unusual noise which I thought had something to do with the fabric making the machine strain.  However, it lasted a whole year sewing okay until last week.  It must be talking back at me saying its time you have me checked into.  I gather I thought it will just go away, but, unfortunately last week its the worst I have ever heard it to sound like.  Now I am really missing it because I was ready to sew many projects I had lined up wanting to do.   It has been a week now and I can't get to anyone to look into a sewing machine repair service or to buy a new one.  I have never been in this type of situation where finances are not available that I can not just go today or tomorrow and buy even the most in expensive sewing machine.

PS. Not only my sewing machine burned out, but my iron too in the same week.

KNOWLEDGE BASE OF BASICS | SERIES STITCH LENGTH

KNOWLEDGE BASE OF BASICS SERIES

STITCH LENGTH

ChatGpt

Absolutely ❤️ Here is the next post in your Knowledge Base of Basics Series, written to fit the style of your previous sewing basics posts.

KNOWLEDGE BASE OF BASICS SERIES

STITCH LENGTH

Stitch length is the distance between each stitch made by your sewing machine.

It may seem like a small detail, but choosing the right stitch length can make a difference in how your sewing project looks, feels, and holds together.

What Does Stitch Length Mean?

When you sew with a machine, the needle moves up and down while the fabric moves underneath the presser foot.

The stitch length setting controls how far the fabric moves between each needle stitch.

  • Shorter stitch length = more stitches per inch

  • Longer stitch length = fewer stitches per inch

Most modern sewing machines allow you to adjust the stitch length with a dial, buttons, or a digital setting.

Common Stitch Lengths

A medium stitch length is commonly used for everyday sewing.

For many general sewing projects, a setting around 2.5 mm is a good starting point.

Here are some general guidelines:

1.5–2.0 mm — Short Stitch

Useful for:

  • Lightweight fabrics

  • Small or detailed sewing

  • Curves

  • Areas where extra control is helpful

2.0–3.0 mm — Regular Sewing

Useful for:

  • Most seams

  • Quilting cotton

  • Everyday sewing projects

  • Garments and household sewing

3.0–4.0 mm — Longer Stitch

Useful for:

  • Basting

  • Gathering

  • Topstitching

  • Heavier fabrics

  • Decorative stitching

These are general guidelines. Your sewing machine, fabric, thread, and project may require a different setting.

Stitch Length for Quilting

When quilting, stitch length is also important.

A stitch that is too short can make the stitching look dense and may cause the fabric to become stiff or puckered.

A stitch that is too long may not provide enough support for the quilt layers.

For many machine-quilting projects, a stitch length around 2.5–3.0 mm is a useful starting point.

Always test your stitching on a scrap or sample piece first.

Stitch Length for Basting

Basting usually requires a longer stitch length.

Long stitches make it easier to remove the stitches later and can also make gathering fabric easier.

For temporary stitching, you might increase the stitch length to around 4.0 mm or longer, depending on your machine and the project.

Why Is Stitch Length Important?

The correct stitch length can help you achieve:

  • Strong and secure seams

  • Smooth-looking stitches

  • Better fabric control

  • Proper tension between the fabric and thread

  • Attractive topstitching

  • Easier gathering and basting

Using the wrong stitch length can sometimes result in puckering, weak seams, skipped stitches, or an uneven appearance.

Always Test Your Stitch

Before beginning a project, especially when working with a new fabric, it is a good idea to make a few test stitches.

Use a scrap of the same or similar fabric and check:

Does the stitch look even?

Is the fabric puckering?

Does the seam feel secure?

Does the thread look balanced on both sides?

If something does not look right, adjust your stitch length, thread tension, needle, or other machine settings as needed.

Stitch Length and Fabric

Different fabrics can require different settings.

A lightweight fabric may look better with a shorter stitch, while a heavier fabric may work better with a longer stitch.

There isn't always one perfect setting for every project.

Learning to adjust your stitch length is part of becoming comfortable with your sewing machine.

A Simple Sewing Tip

When in doubt, test it out!

Keep a few scraps of fabric nearby when sewing. Testing your stitch before starting the actual project can save time, prevent frustration, and help you get the finished look you want.
